Sleep Quality of Pregnant Women Poorly at Risk Premature Babies

Pregnant women who experience sleep disturbances in early and late pregnancy should be vigilant, because it is associated with an increased risk of preterm birth of the baby.

Recent research suggests that the increased risk of preterm delivery in pregnant women who experience sleep disturbances during the first and third trimester.

Quality of sleep in the second trimester did not correlate with an increased risk only on the first and third trimester. Researchers say that the amount of sleep is often increased during the second trimester as part of the pregnancy, although it is unclear why.

One possible explanation is due to hormonal or other biological factors, but there are no data to support. This relationship remained stable even after the health risk factors and income levels were taken into account.

“This supports the evidence that poor sleep quality is an important risk factor for preterm birth,” said Michele Okun, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

“This may occur due to other risk factors, but sleep can be measured easily and quickly during doctor visits before birth. Suffice it to assess the quality of sleep pregnant women, we can identify risks early in pregnancy, when there is still time to intervene.

Okun and his fellow researchers went on to suggest that a biological cause for the increased risk of preterm delivery is disrupted sleep. Poor sleep quality has been shown to trigger inflammation and may activate processes that cause premature birth. Sleep disorders can also be combined with stress can also trigger inflammation.

The study, published on November 1 in the journal Sleep is recommended that further research is still needed, but the initial results of this study is an important and encouraging.

“The need to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes remains high. Although the community and advancing medical knowledge, we still find plenty of women who gave birth to premature babies or other adverse outcomes,” he concluded.
